Turnstile NEVER ENOUGH, Scowl, Great Grandpa and more
This week on the Album of Record podcast, we covered a lot—starting with Great Grandpa’s new album Patience, Moonbeam. I’ve been waiting on this one for a while, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s uneven in spots, but when they hit those anthemic highs—especially on tracks like “Doom”—it really works. Andrew came in ready to hate it (he’ll tell you that himself), but even he walked away impressed. He hates the band name, thinks the drummer is kind of a dud, but he still found five or so tracks he liked. That’s a win in my book.
Then we got into Turnstile, which quickly turned into Andrew’s personal TED Talk. He’s convinced they might be the most important rock band on the planet right now—and he makes a strong case. We talked about how they’ve blown past the hardcore scene and crossed into bigger spaces without losing what made them great. Their new single “Never Enough” is a total slow burn and a bold choice for a first track. It teases something bigger, and honestly, it’s working. I’m in. Andrew’s way in. We also break down their lineup changes, how Meg Mills came into the picture, and why this next album could be a companion piece to Glow On.
Last but definitely not least: Scowl. Their new record How We All Became Angels kind of blew me away. I wasn’t really on board with their earlier stuff—it was a little too punk for me—but this album pulled me in immediately. The vocals, the melodies, the production—it’s just locked in. Kat Moss is singing now (and singing well), and the band still knows how to punch through when they want to. Andrew’s been a Scowl fan for a while, but this was the one that converted me. Infectious from start to finish.
We wrapped it all up talking about Scowl’s performance on Colbert. Late-night TV isn’t what it used to be, but it still matters when a band like Scowl gets a shot. They looked cool, they sounded great, and it gave me goosebumps.
If you check any of these out, let us know what you think. We’re reading the comments. (Most of them, anyway.)
